ISLAMABAD: A rare case was filed before the Pakistani Supreme Court on Tuesday by a female petitioner who was at odds with her former daughter-in-law over ten tons of gold.
A woman named Sabeeha Khanam filed a lawsuit before the highest court challenging the high court’s decision to give her former daughter-in-law 10 troy ounces of gold.
The case was heard by a three-person bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa.
Judge Isa questioned Zulfiqar Naqvi, the petitioner’s attorney, about the specifics of the two women’s family dispute. In response, the attorney informed the court that the dispute concerned the gold’s custody and involved a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
The chief justice questioned her daughter-in-law’s divorce status and her Haq-e-Mehr, which is a required gift or payment given by the husband to the bride at the time of marriage.
In response to the bench’s question, the woman’s attorney stated that she had been divorced, had three children, and that her alimony was only Rs 2,000.
The top justice spoke on the issue with awarding a woman with three children ten tolas of gold.
Khanam’s appeal to reverse the high court’s decision was later denied by the supreme court.
