Sabrina Carpenter is set to trade her coffee cups for teacups, stepping into the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland. The US singer and actress will both star in and produce a new musical film based on Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, BBC Newsbeat reports.
The untitled project is being developed by Universal Pictures, with acclaimed filmmaker Lorene Scafaria, known for Hustlers, attached as writer and director. Details about Carpenter’s role and the film’s production timeline are still under wraps.
If the project moves forward, it will mark Carpenter’s first lead role in a major studio movie. The 26-year-old singer reportedly pitched the idea to Universal last year, and Scafaria soon joined to help bring the vision to life.
Carpenter, a six-time Grammy nominee for her seventh album Man’s Best Friend, is currently wrapping up the final dates of her Short n’ Sweet Tour, including headline performances at London’s BST Festival.
Acting isn’t new for Carpenter, who began her career as Maya Hart on Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World. She has since appeared in Netflix hits like Work It and Tall Girl, as well as The Hate U Give from 20th Century Fox. She’s also set to appear in a one-off Muppet Show special for Disney+ in 2026.
The story of Alice in Wonderland, first published by Lewis Carroll in 1865, follows a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a magical world filled with talking animals and fantastical creatures. Previous adaptations include Disney’s 1951 animated classic and Tim Burton’s 2010 live-action film starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
