Rana Sanaullah, the leader of the PML-N and the prime minister’s adviser on political and public affairs, alluded to a developing “minimum consensus” among political parties on contentious constitutional reforms centered on the judiciary, which included a proposal to establish a constitutional court, on Tuesday.
While the opposition party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz were separately drafting the draft of the constitutional amendments, Sanaullah hinted at a potential breakthrough on the package in the days ahead.
Following the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) request last month for the early issuance of a constitution, the government pushed the proposed constitutional package amid rumors about a possible extension in the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, who is scheduled to retire in October of this year.
