Marseille is once again in mourning as the second brother of French anti-drug campaigner Amine Kessaci has been killed in a suspected gang attack. Mehdi Kessaci, 20, was shot while parking his car in the city center when a motorbike pulled up and the passenger fired a 9mm pistol at him.
This tragedy follows the murder of his older brother, Brahim, in 2020, whose body was found burned in a car—a method locally known as a “barbecue,” often used in gang-related killings.
Amine Kessaci, who founded an association to support victims of drug-related violence and has even taken his campaign to President Emmanuel Macron, is now facing another devastating personal loss.
Marseille continues to struggle with escalating turf wars between rival gangs, particularly in the city’s northern neighborhoods.
