According to sources who spoke with Geo News on Saturday, there would likely be a significant shake-up in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party ranks as Khawaja Saad Rafique takes over as secretary general.
The suggestion to name Rafique as the new secretary general is scheduled to be submitted during the party’s general council meeting, where the ultimate decision is anticipated to be made, as per the sources.
Should all proceed according to plan, federal minister Ahsan Iqbal will hand over the position to the lawmaker.
As the head of the Ministry of Planning and Development at the moment, Iqbal had asked the party leadership to absolve him of his secretary general responsibilities during the period the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) was in power, which ran from April 2022 to August 2023.
Iqbal stated in an interview with Geo News, “I told the party leadership years ago that I want to leave the post.”
He said that his hectic schedule as a minister makes it challenging to manage the party office effectively.
Nawaz Sharif is expected to be named the party’s president at the PML-N general council meeting, which is scheduled for May 11 in Lahore, according to the sources.
The information about Rafique’s role within the party surfaced a week after President Rana Sanaullah of the PML-N Punjab branch declared that Nawaz would once again assume the leadership of the ruling party.
