In a broad rejection of President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, Democrats seized control of Congress in Tuesday’s 2026 midterm elections. This defeat extended well into dependable GOP territory.
At least seven Senate seats were switched by Democrats in both battlegrounds and ruby-red states: Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kansas, which hasn’t elected a Democratic senator in almost a century. They managed to hold onto battlefield seats in Michigan and Georgia. More than two dozen House districts, some of which had gone for Trump by double digits in 2024, were flipped by Democrats.
