Social Media Companies Face Lawsuits

It is one of several courtrooms around the nation where Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube have been defending themselves against claims that their platforms have harmed or adversely affected children’s mental health.

Here are a few of the most significant lawsuits against social media firms.

California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey’s joint case

The deal was reached in the second week of what was supposed to be a six-week trial in Oakland, where witnesses, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, would have testified.

California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey were the four states who were involved as plaintiffs. Three years ago, they were one of several states that sued Meta for its design elements and the ensuing harm to kids on its platforms. The deal also prevents the trials that the other 25 states had planned to have in the future.

Tennessee argued Instagram harms kids’ mental health

A trial against Meta that was in progress in Tennessee was also concluded by the settlement.

Although it chose to file in its own local court, the Tennessee attorney general’s office participated in the multistate investigation of social media corporations that led to the 2023 complaint against Meta by dozens of states.

Because Instagram was deceiving parents and harming children, we brought Meta to trial. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti stated, “We’re wrapping up the trial with a settlement that imposes unprecedented protections for kids and delivers record-setting money for Tennessee’s Children’s Digital Protection Fund.”

New Mexico’s case resulted in hefty fine, outlined changes to Meta platforms

Since New Mexico had already prevailed in a lawsuit against Meta, it was excluded from the 48 states that participated in the settlement.

The state claimed that the firm disguised its knowledge of child sexual exploitation on its platforms and intentionally damaged children’s mental health. In March, a jury found in favor of the state that there were thousands of infractions, each of which added up to a $375 million fine.

Florida was the second state that declined to participate in the settlement, citing the attorney general’s opinion that it was too lenient for Meta.

School districts across the country have sued social media companies

Numerous school districts around the United States have filed lawsuits against the main social media corporations in an attempt to recover the costs they claim they spend in addressing the negative effects of social media addiction on children’s mental health.

A small, rural Kentucky school district filed a case, which was scheduled to go to trial this summer in a federal court in California. However, before the trial started, defendants Meta, TikTok, Snap, and YouTube reached a settlement.

Out of 1,200 similar instances, the Kentucky case was chosen as a bellwether. In a statement, the plaintiffs’ lawyers said that their “focus remains on pursuing justice.”

Jury in Los Angeles trial found Meta, YouTube liable for harms

In a case involving social media addiction and allegations that the firms created their platforms to entice teenage users without regard for their welfare, a jury earlier this year found Meta and YouTube responsible.

During the trial, the plaintiff, whose initials are KGM, testified that she developed a social media addiction as a youngster, which made her mental health issues worse. following almost 40 hours of discussion.

The case included TikTok and Snapchat as defendants, but they reached a settlement before to the start of the trial. Both YouTube and Meta have appealed the decision.

Individual plaintiffs have filed similar lawsuits

Although the Los Angeles trial was the first of its type, thousands of similar cases have been brought by people against social media firms.

Many claim that the design elements of the platforms made people dependent on social media, which had a negative impact on their mental health. However, the plaintiffs also claim that the usage of social media by young people caused further injury.

Families of children and young people who committed suicide as a result of their problematic use of social media, as well as families whose children accidentally overdosed from drug purchases made possible by social media platforms, have brought some cases.
