After previous England coach Chris Silverwood left in July, the 55-year-old former all-rounder took over.
Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand in two Tests last month and prevailed in the third Test against England at The Oval under Jayasuriya.
His appointment is valid through March 31, 2026, which coincides with the next T20 World Cup, which Sri Lanka and India will co-host in the first half of 2026.
After a career that comprised 110 Tests, 445 One-Day Internationals, and 31 Twenty20s, Jayasuriya is already considered one of Sri Lanka’s finest players.
Jayasuriya, a cunning left-arm spinner and devastating opener, played for Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup, when they placed second and advanced to the 2007 final.
After retirement, he was appointed to his native country’s Parliament and served as the head selector for the cricket board.
He was given a two-year ban in 2019 after acknowledging that he had broken the anti-corruption code of the International Cricket Council.
Jayasuriya also led a one-day international series triumph against India before the Test series in England.
Sri Lanka still has a chance to make the World Test Championship final the following year, despite losing the Test series 2-1 against England. They won the series finale and the 2-0 series win over New Zealand at home.
