The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said that two strong aftershocks struck eastern Afghanistan in 12 hours, raising concerns of additional fatalities and damage in an area where 2,200 people have perished in earthquakes in the last four days.
They come after the South Asian nation has already been devastated by two earthquakes, conflict, poverty, and dwindling help. By Thursday, the Taliban government projected 3,640 wounded and 2,205 fatalities.
According to a Reuters witness, the region of Nangarhar was struck by constant aftershocks, and information about the damage was still being gathered.
Hours after one late Thursday evening, GFZ reported that Friday’s earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.4, had impacted the southeast at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
