As rescuers looked for potential victims, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of the central Philippines on Tuesday night damaged roads and houses and cut off power in some areas.
Hours after the earthquake struck at sea off the island of Cebu’s northern tip at 9:59 p.m. (1359 GMT), municipal workers inspected a gym and a collapsed public building in the island’s north, according to provincial rescue officer Wilson Ramos.
He told AFP, “There could be people trapped beneath collapsed buildings,” referring to rescue operations in the 90,000-person city of Bogo, which is close to the epicentre, and the village of San Remigio. “I don’t know how many people are missing,” he remarked.
