Lisbon: Following a summer already marred by destructive fires, hundreds of firemen are battling new wildfires in Portugal and Spain, according to civil protection authorities.
In a number of locations, strong winds have exacerbated the fire, necessitating road closures, village evacuations, and immediate home protection measures.
According to the civil protection office, 600 firefighters were sent to put out the greatest fire, which was burning in Seia, central Portugal.
According to a civil protection representative cited by the Lusa news agency, the top concern was “to protect homes.” A person suspected of igniting the fire has been taken into custody, according to the police.
Due to a nearby fire, authorities in Spain isolated the small northwest community of Castromil on Saturday as a precaution.
