India and Canada Re-establish Relations With Landmark Nuclear Energy Deal India and Canada are working to repair their damaged relationship by signing a 10-year nuclear agreement. This announcement was made after Indian PM Narendra Modi and Canadian Premier Mark Carney met in New Delhi. After months of diplomatic tension, both leaders announced a new beginning. Nuclear Energy and Uranium Supply Deal A long-term uranium agreement is at the heart of this renewed partnership. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, confirmed Canada's support for India's nuclear civil energy program. Both countries are also collaborating on advanced reactor technologies and small modular reactors. Carney stated that Canada was well positioned to meet India’s increasing demand for nuclear energy. Carney said the agreement was part of a larger strategic energy partnership that aims to support clean, reliable power. Economic Targets and Trade Talks The trade was also a key topic of discussion. The two sides have agreed to move forward with a comprehensive economic partnership that has been pending for a very long time. Carney stated that he wanted to complete the free-trade agreement by 2026. Modi has set the goal of 50 billion dollars worth of bilateral trade. Both countries have plans to increase their cooperation, including in the areas of technology, vital minerals, aerospace, defence, educational, artificial intelligence and supercomputing. The two countries will host a joint renewable energy summit. The two governments want to minimize their exposure to the high US tariffs. The strategy includes strengthening trade relations with one another. Diplomatic Tensions and Rebuilding Trust The relationship between Canada and India deteriorated when Justin Trudeau, the former Canadian prime minister, accused India of being involved in the killing of Sikh rebel leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar by Canadian authorities. India has categorically denied the claim. Diplomats were expelled and visa services suspended. The trade and diplomatic relations slowed down sharply. Canadian courts continue to hear the case of four men accused in Nijjar’s murder. Carney, who took office in January last year has been working to restore ties. Carney's government said that it did not think India was currently involved in violent crimes or threats to Canada. Some members of Canada's Sikh Diaspora, as well as a Liberal MP have voiced concern. They still believe they are being targeted. Anita Anand, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs clarified she wouldn't use the same words as an Indian official who said that India has ended foreign interference. She defended a renewed dialogue, saying that diplomatic engagement was necessary for progress. A Strategic Shift for a Global Landscape in Change Analysts view the renewed partnership in a pragmatic way. India is looking to reduce its dependence on Russia and diversify their energy resources. Canada seeks new investment and market opportunities in Asia. The Canadian public also seems to be in favor of reengagement. Recent Angus Reid survey found that the half of Canadians think this is a good time to restore ties. Carney's four-day visit began in Mumbai where he met with business leaders for a boost to trade and investment. Carney will visit Australia and Japan after India as part of Canada’s larger strategy to increase economic partnership in the Indo Pacific Region.
