The Iris Scan system works The user can verify their identity using a mobile application or an orb-shaped scanner. This scans captures the colored portion of the eye, the iris. After the scanner is approved, a digital ID called World ID will be created. The ID can be stored in the phone of the user and used on all supported platforms. World Network Behind the Technology Worldcoin, formerly known as Worldcoin, is the source of this technology. The technology is being developed by Tools for Humanity. Sam Altman co-founded and chairs the startup, which also runs OpenAI. As online content grows increasingly automated, the company claims that this system will separate human accounts from AI-driven ones. Why platforms are adopting it Tinder is facing a problem of fake profiles and fraudulent accounts. These accounts often use AI to create convincing images and conversation to fool users. Match Group which is Tinder's owner, added video self-portrait checks. This new option to scan your iris is intended to provide a more robust level of security. Zoom also faces a new risk. The DeepFake Technology has enabled people to pretend to be real during video chats, such as executives or coworkers. Growing Concerns About AI Scams The use of deepfake fraud is on the rise. One reported case from Hong Kong involved a worker being tricked by AI-generated fakes into sending $25 million. In the next few years, AI-driven fraud may cause losses of tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. The Next Step World ID will allow Tinder and Zoom to scan their iris and verify identity if desired. These companies claim that this will help to restore trust when it comes to online interactions, where AI impersonation has become more prevalent.
