Rubio Signals Shift in US Foreign Policy at Munich Security Conference US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the world is entering a new phase in global politics as he arrived in Germany for the Munich Security Conference. He described this moment as a turning point and urged allies to rethink their roles in a fast changing international system. Rubio is leading the US delegation at the first major global forum since President Donald Trump renewed his controversial proposal to annex Greenland, a semi autonomous territory of Denmark. The proposal has raised serious concerns across Europe and has tested trust within the Nato alliance. Europe Reconsiders Its Security Dependence French President Emmanuel Macron has called on European nations to prepare for greater independence from the United States. He believes Europe must strengthen its own defence structure in case US support weakens. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz used his opening speech to urge Washington to rebuild transatlantic trust. He also confirmed that Germany and France are holding confidential talks about forming a joint European nuclear deterrent. At present, only France and the United Kingdom possess nuclear weapons in Europe. Many other European countries rely on the US nuclear umbrella under NATO for protection. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said the transatlantic bond remains strong and essential, despite political tensions. Greenland Dispute Adds Pressure Tensions increased after Trump claimed Greenland holds strategic value for US national security. He argued that Russian and Chinese ships operate heavily in the region, although he offered no clear evidence. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen plans to meet Rubio to address these concerns. Many European leaders see the Greenland issue as a serious challenge to alliance unity. Ukraine War and Peace Talks The war in Ukraine remains a top priority at the conference. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the meeting could lead to new steps that strengthen both Ukrainian and European security. Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have scheduled fresh peace talks in Geneva on 17 and 18 February. Earlier discussions in Abu Dhabi produced no breakthrough, although both sides carried out a prisoner exchange soon after. US China and Iran in Focus Rubio also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the conference. Washington and Beijing are trying to ease tensions over trade, tariffs, and Taiwan. Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping described Taiwan as the most sensitive issue between China and the United States. He urged caution regarding US military support for the island. Iran’s nuclear programme is another key topic. Tehran insists its programme serves peaceful purposes. However, Trump has warned that the US could consider military action if Iran refuses to agree to a new nuclear deal. A Defining Moment for the Transatlantic Alliance The Munich Security Conference gathers around 50 global leaders this year. Discussions focus on European defence, Nato’s future, and the strength of US alliances. Many experts believe US foreign policy changes have already reshaped global dynamics. The coming months may determine whether transatlantic cooperation grows stronger or faces deeper strain.

Tumbler Ridge Mass Shooting Leaves Small Canadian Town in Deep Mourning A quiet mountain town in western Canada is struggling to come to terms with an unthinkable tragedy. In Tumbler Ridge, nine people, including six children, lost their lives in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent Canadian history. For years, residents believed serious violence could never reach their close knit community. That sense of safety has now been shattered. A Community That Felt Untouchable Tumbler Ridge is home to about 2,400 people. It sits along winding rural roads in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Many families work in the mining industry, which has shaped the town’s identity for decades. The area is also known for its natural beauty and its UNESCO recognised geopark, one of only five in Canada. Locals often left doors unlocked. Newcomers who took extra security measures were teased. Nothing like this had ever happened before. Now, that belief feels painfully naive. The Victims: Young Lives Cut Short Police confirmed the identities of the victims on Thursday. Among them was 12 year old Zoey Benoit. Loved ones described her as a brave and determined child. Another victim, 12 year old Kylie Smith, was remembered as the light of her family. She dreamed of attending art school in a big city one day. Flowers, teddy bears, and handwritten notes now line a memorial outside the local school. Each item reflects a life lost too soon. What Police Know So Far Investigators say 18 year old Jesse Van Rootselaar carried out the attack. Authorities found the suspect dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Police stated that the suspect was born male and had begun transitioning to female about six years ago. Earlier that day, the suspect allegedly shot and killed their mother and step brother at a nearby residence. Officers later responded to reports of gunfire at the secondary school around 13:30 local time. The school has about 160 students. During the attack, dozens hid inside classrooms with their teachers. Seventeen year old Darian Quist said he and classmates barricaded themselves inside a mechanics classroom using metal tables. They stayed hidden for more than two hours before officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and SWAT teams escorted them to safety. Grief That Touches Everyone Parents gathered at a community centre as they waited for news about their children. For some, the wait ended in heartbreak. Local pastor Tracy Krauss said nearly everyone in town knows someone directly affected. Even families who did not lose a loved one feel shaken. The suspect’s mother and step brother were also among the victims. Community members say the surviving relatives are grieving as well. The suspect’s father, Justin Van Rootselaar, told CBC News that he was estranged from his child. He offered condolences to all families impacted by what he called a senseless act of violence. Support has poured in from across the country. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit the town to offer his support. A Town Forever Changed Residents say the hardest part is that this happened in a place where everyone knows each other. The victims were not strangers. They were classmates, neighbours, and family friends. In Tumbler Ridge, grief now connects every household. The town may be small, but the loss feels immeasurable.

Mushroom in China Causes Hallucinations of Tiny Humans Mysterious Mushroom in Yunnan In Yunnan Province, China, doctors see hundreds of patients each year reporting a strange symptom: visions of tiny, elf-like figures moving around their homes. These miniature beings appear under doors, crawl on walls, and cling to furniture. Researchers have traced these unusual hallucinations to Lanmaoa asiatica, a local mushroom. It grows near pine trees and is popular for its savory, umami flavor. People eat it at home, in restaurants, and in markets during peak season from June to August. The Importance of Cooking The hallucinations only occur if the mushroom is undercooked. At local hot pot restaurants, servers warn diners to wait until the cooking timer finishes. Colin Domnauer, a doctoral candidate studying this species, said, "It seems like very common knowledge in the culture there." A Rare Mystery Outside China Outside Yunnan, L. asiatica remains largely unknown. Giuliana Furci, founder of the Fungi Foundation, explained that many people had tried to find this psychedelic mushroom, but its existence remained elusive until recently. Domnauer is studying L. asiatica to understand the compound responsible for these unusual hallucinations and what it can teach us about the human brain. Historical Accounts Reports of L. asiatica date back decades. In 1991, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences described cases where people saw “lilliputian hallucinations,” tiny human or fantasy figures, after eating the mushroom. They even noticed these visions on their clothing and dishes, and they became stronger when the eyes were closed. Similar experiences were documented in the 1960s in Papua New Guinea. Researchers Gordon Wasson and Roger Heim encountered stories of locals going “insane” after eating a mushroom. They sent samples to Albert Hofmann, the chemist who discovered LSD, but he found no active compounds. At the time, the phenomenon was dismissed as a cultural tale. Why Scientists Are Curious The consistent reports of hallucinatory visions across different regions and cultures make L. asiatica unique. Scientists hope that studying it can reveal not only the chemical responsible but also insights into human perception and the brain’s response to hallucinogens.

Wuthering Heights Remake Sparks Mixed Reviews Ahead of Valentine’s Release Emerald Fennell’s much-anticipated take on Wuthering Heights, starring Australian stars Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, is dividing critics just days before its Valentine's weekend release. The film reimagines Emily Brontë’s classic tale of obsession, revenge, and passion, centering on the intense relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff. Critics Divided: Praise vs Criticism The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw criticized the film as an "emotionally hollow, bodice-ripping misfire," giving it just two stars. He described Fennell’s approach as over-the-top, calling it "a 20-page fashion shoot of relentless silliness," complete with ripped bodices and hints of BDSM. On the other hand, Robbie Collin of the Telegraph awarded it five stars, calling it "resplendently lurid, oozy, and wild." Collin defended the film against claims of style over substance, arguing that Fennell proves style can enhance the story. According to him, Cathy and Heathcliff’s emotions shine through their clothing, settings, and every cinematic detail. A Bold, Stylized Take The film, set in the late 18th and early 19th century, stars Elordi, 28, and Robbie, 35, as the iconic lovers. Fennell markets it with quotation marks around the title, signaling her personal interpretation of Brontë’s novel. Adding to the film’s modern edge, pop singer Charli XCX created an original soundtrack. Some critics, like Dulcie Pearce from the Sun, compared the film’s drama to a Mills & Boon romance, claiming it prioritizes sex over story. Clarisse Loughrey from the Independent was harsher, giving the film one star. She argued the adaptation pushed the lead performances toward pantomime while portraying the poor as sexual deviants and the wealthy as clueless. Mixed But Memorable Other reviewers offered more balanced takes. Danny Leigh of the Financial Times gave it three stars, describing the sexual tension as a mix of arthouse style and comedy reminiscent of a Carry On film. Similarly, Donald Clarke from the Irish Times praised the adaptation’s narrative structure, noting its surprising loyalty to Brontë’s original story. Empire’s Beth Webb also awarded three stars, calling it "undeniably expertly crafted" and highlighting Elordi’s rising star power, though she wished the film’s energy lasted throughout. Conclusion Fennell’s Wuthering Heights is a polarizing cinematic experiment. Some view it as a bold, stylish reinvention that captures the raw passion of Brontë’s characters, while others feel it sacrifices depth for visual flair. Audiences are likely to leave the theater either enthralled or underwhelmed.

TikTok Tracks You Even Outside the App Most people know TikTok monitors activity on its own platform. What’s less obvious is that it follows you across other websites too. Surprisingly, it can collect personal and sensitive data even from users who have never installed the app. Recent observations revealed websites sharing data about users’ cancer diagnoses, fertility, and mental health directly with TikTok. This creates a tracking network far beyond the social media platform. How TikTok Collects Sensitive Data TikTok uses its updated tracking tools, like the TikTok pixel, in ways that differ from competitors. Patrick Jackson, CTO of Disconnect, calls it "extremely invasive." For example, clicking a form button to indicate cancer status could send TikTok not only your response but also your email address. This raises concerns about privacy and data misuse. Privacy Concerns Amid US Operations Sale These changes come weeks after TikTok’s US operations were sold to companies linked to former US President Donald Trump. Some human rights experts and users worry about privacy risks. TikTok maintains it follows clear guidelines when responding to government data requests. Steps to Protect Your Privacy The good news is that users can take simple steps to limit tracking. In just a few minutes, you can prevent TikTok from collecting sensitive information online. Use browser extensions that block tracking pixels. Limit sharing of personal details on websites. Regularly clear cookies and site data. Check privacy settings in your browser and TikTok account. These small actions can significantly reduce how much TikTok sees about your life online. Final Thoughts TikTok’s reach is expanding, but users don’t have to feel powerless. Understanding how your data is tracked and taking action is the first step toward online privacy. Awareness and quick adjustments can help protect sensitive information from being shared without your consent.
