After pressure mounted to free the elderly British couple, who had been held in Afghanistan for nearly eight months due to health concerns, the Taliban authorities announced their release on Friday.
The reason behind the arrest of 80-year-old Peter Reynolds and his 76-year-old wife Barbara in February while they were making their way back to their home has not been disclosed by Taliban officials.
“We’ve had excellent treatment. “We can’t wait to see our kids,” Barbara remarked as she stood beside her husband on the Kabul airport runway.
“If we can, we would like to go back to Afghanistan. We are citizens of Afghanistan,” she continued.
After being married in Kabul in 1970, the couple has lived in Afghanistan for nearly 20 years, operating educational initiatives there.
