Dortmund made it to the 2023–24 Champions League final under Terzic, 41, but they lost to Real Madrid at Wembley.
After “a joint discussion”, the German club announced that Terzic’s request had been granted.
“After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after nine years at BVB, including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach, I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline,” Terzic stated.
“Everyone who knows me knows that I’ve had a really tough time making this decision.
However, despite lengthy conversations, my basic opinion has not altered.
“Thank you, I hope to see you soon, and best of luck to Borussia Dortmund.”
From 2010 to 2013, Terzic coached Dortmund’s youth before joining Turkish club Besiktas as Slaven Bilic’s assistant.
After Bilic was fired in November 2017, he left West Ham and rejoined Dortmund as Lucien Favre’s assistant. In 2015, he had followed Bilic to West Ham in the Premier League.
