Park rangers were dispatched to reports of a visitor falling from the Pipe Creek Vista in Grand Canyon National Park about 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The body of Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, of Hickory, North Carolina, was recovered about a quarter mile distant, according to park officials.
Indiana Bible College recognized Mr Mejia as a student at the Indianapolis school, stating that he was known for his friendly smile and caring spirit, according to News.
“His absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him,” the school stated.
The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
Authorities warn all Grand Canyon tourists to stay at least six feet (1.8 meters) away from the rim’s edges.
According to National Park Service records, 14 people died in Grand Canyon National Park between 2014 and 2019, the most current time period for which figures are available.
In total, 205 people died in falls across the US park network over that time period.
According to a news analysis, North Cascades National Park in Washington State had the highest fatality rate last year.
