ISLAMABAD: A trial court on Saturday granted bail to YouTuber Asad Toor in a case involving a hostile campaign against Supreme Court judges.
Special Judge Central Humayun Dilawar heard Toor’s request for post-arrest bail after he was detained by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on charges of inciting a social media campaign against the court and other institutions.
The court granted Toor bail in exchange for Rs5,000 in surety bonds. FIA Special Prosecutor Syed Ashfaq Hussain Shah did not oppose the petitioner’s bail application.
Hours after the court judgment, the journalist was released from Adiala Jail after obtaining bail.
In January, the caretaker administration formed a six-member high-powered joint investigative team (JIT) to look into the malicious campaign launched against judges of the Supreme Court.
Toor was detained by the FIA for eight hours on February 23 after appearing before the JIT in connection with the inquiry despite not being served with notice as required by due process, according to his lawyer, Imaan Mazari.
The YouTuber was arrested in connection with the case on February 26 and ordered to undergo a five-day physical the following day. On March 6, the same lower court prolonged Toor’s physical remand by two days.
On March 8, the YouTuber was arrested and placed under judicial remand for 14 days.
According to the first information report (FIR) filed against Toor, the vlogger allegedly conducted a hostile campaign against the courts on social media platforms X and YouTube.
