As former British number one Laura Robson put it, “absolute tennis keeno” Jack Draper was not particularly tall as a youngster.
However, a well-timed growth spurt in his late teens saw him reach 6 feet 4 inches, and now that his physique has adjusted, the 22-year-old is beginning to appear really threatening.
In addition to being able to dominate from the baseline and finish service games quickly, Draper has been carefully considering two aspects of our daily lives that are essential to many of us: caffeine and smartphones.
Before Queen’s return in 2022, Draper played two practice sets with Cameron Norrie. Draper prevailed in the opening set but lost the second set quickly. Norrie hypothesized that Draper’s checking of his phone at the change of ends would have interfered with his ability to concentrate.
Draper promised to never use his phone during practice again, and he recently made the decision to give up caffeine after speaking with coach James Trotman.
“I used to take a lot of caffeine before I played because I felt like maybe sometimes with my emotions, I would feel tired before I played,” Draper said to BBC Sport following his triumph over Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals.
