Robert Jenrick, the former minister of immigration, received the most votes (28), followed by Kemi Badenoch, who was reportedly the favorite (22).
Mel Stride, the former employment and pensions secretary, won sixteen votes, former home secretary James Cleverly received twenty-one, and former security minister Tom Tugendhat received seventeen. Dame Priti received a mere fourteen votes.
Next Monday, there will be one more voting round to reduce the number of candidates to four. After that, they will participate in an onstage.
The party’s general membership will then select its leader from the last two candidates following another vote by MPs; the outcome is anticipated to be made public on November 2.
Later on Wednesday, Dame Priti wrote a statement on X, expressing gratitude to party members for their backing throughout the campaign and urging the other contenders to keep in mind that they are “the heart and soul of our party.”.
