The subsurface water reserves of Pakistan are fast depleting, posing a serious dilemma for the nation.
According to a recent research published by the Pakistan Council for Research on Water Resources (PCRWR), during the previous eight years, the nation’s groundwater level has decreased by more than 5.66%.
The level of groundwater depletion in several areas is described in depth in the paper. The largest province, Punjab, has been particularly severely affected; 22.84% of the area is currently totally devoid of groundwater.
Furthermore, 36.17% of Punjab is getting close to a tipping point where all of its subsurface water may disappear.
Significant water scarcity is also a problem in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), where 32.96% of the province has already lost its subsurface water supply.
