When Laci and their unborn child, Connor, were discovered dead in the bay in April 2003, Peterson was convicted guilty of their murders. He is presently incarcerated for life.
On Christmas Eve 2002, Laci, who was eight months pregnant, vanished from the couple’s Modesto home.
A mattress discovered inside a burning van, a hammer and glove that might have been used in a nearby robbery, and debris that washed up in the bay where Laci was discovered were some of the 14 objects that Peterson’s defense team tried to have retested but were turned down.
For a long time, Peterson and his backers have concentrated on someone they believe may have slain his wife during an alleged break-in at a house across the street from their own.
THE PROSECUTOR SCOTT PETERSON, ASKED THE COURT TO DENY THE KILLER’S APPEAL ATTEMPT
Despite several unsuccessful appeals over the years, Peterson was able to get his death sentence reversed and replaced with a life sentence without the prospect of release.
The Los Angeles Innocence Project has taken up this most recent appeal, which claims there is untested DNA evidence that suggests someone else might have been involved in the murders of Laci and Connor.
