LAHORE: The Zardaris currently hold the record for having the most parliamentarians from a family in Pakistani politics after President Asif Ali Zardari’s daughter Aseefa Bhutto Zardari won the by-election on NA-207 without facing opposition.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced Aseefa’s election as a member of the National Assembly (MNA) without a contest after she was elected a day earlier in the Shaheed Benazirabad (formerly Nawabshah-I) seat.
It’s important to remember that 11 candidates, including Aseefa, submitted their nomination papers to compete in the by-election on the seat that President Zardari left. President Zardari took office following his joint nomination by the ruling alliance.
Consequently, the Zardari family has surpassed the Sharif family record by having the greatest number of members from the same family in the nation’s parliamentary history.
Given that both political families are accused of favoring their relatives when allocating tickets prior to elections, they are well-known for having dominated Pakistan for a considerable amount of time, which has strengthened dynastic politics in the nation.
Currently serving as president of the nation is Zardari himself; his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, daughter Aseefa, brother-in-law Munawar Ali Talpur, sister Faryal Talpur, and sister Azra Pechuho are all members of the Sindh provincial legislature.
