The Mystics wisely moved the game to a bigger stadium in order to take advantage of the fact that Caitlin Clark and the Fever would be concluding their season in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. The Washington Wizards of the NBA now play their home games at Capital One Arena.
Washington usually plays at the Congress Heights residential neighborhood in southeast Washington, D.C.’s The Entertainment and Sports Arena. It can only hold 4,200 people.
However, the maximum capacity of Capital One Arena, which is situated in the Chinatown neighborhood of the city’s larger Penn Quarter, is 20,356 for basketball games.
Even though they came into the game with just 13 wins, the Mystics had no trouble packing those seats with Clark in tow.
The 20,711 spectators on Thursday set a new record for the most people to attend a WNBA regular-season game. The previous regular-season record of 20,674, set by Washington four times in the 1998 and 1999 seasons, was surpassed by the new record.
The fact that the home team defeated Clark’s Fever 92-91 was the highlight of the event for the Mystics supporters.
