Amidst the ongoing political drama surrounding the government’s proposed constitutional amendment bill, the Treasury and opposition benches on Monday got into a furious dispute during the National Assembly session.
The ruling coalition reportedly failed to secure the necessary numbers, or a two-thirds majority in parliament, on Sunday despite intense efforts, presumably focused on Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s approval of the proposed amendments. This is why today’s lower house session of parliament is being held.
The meeting, which had been slated to start at 11 a.m. yesterday, was ultimately postponed until late last night and is now permanently adjourned.
The potential for future constitutional changes arises from rumors regarding an extension of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez’s term.
