The show’s producers announced on Tuesday that Montreal artist Charlotte Cardin leads the 2024 Juno nominations with six, including honors for artist, album, pop album, composer, and single of the year, in a nearly perfect replica of her performance in 2022.
After the somewhat dated 2023 ceremony, Cardin—who hosted the event and took home the gold in four of those categories two years ago—was one of a wave of relatively more recent musicians.
Daniel Caesar of Toronto, who is nominated for five Junos this year—including fan choice, single, album, artist, and modern R&B song of the year—is right behind Cardin. Adjacent to Caesar is Ottawa’s Talk, whose true name is Nick Durocher, who received five nominations as well: record, substitute record,
The 28-year-old Caesar now has more Juno nominations in his career than Grammy nominations for the first time since 2017. Caesar’s breakthrough song, Freudian, earned him his first Grammy in 2019 for best R&B performance and his first Juno in 2016 for best R&B/soul recording.
Caesar’s professional achievement is even more recent than Durocher’s. He wrote and released the song Run Away to Mars in 2022 after living in his parents’ basement during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and being unemployed.
Durocher’s song’s TikTok virality propelled him to talk show appearances and further recognition. Run Away to Mars is featured on his debut album, Lord of the Flies & Birds & Bees, which was published in 2023.
The Juno awards will take place in Halifax, and Talk, Josh Ross, and Karan Aujila will all be performing, the organizers said on Tuesday. Cardin’s performance was already confirmed.
several platinum Nelly Furtado, a Canadian singer, is nominated for dance record of the year and will host and perform.
When Furtado presented for the first time in 2007, she won every trophy for which she was nominated.
