The International Monetary Fund cautioned against “complacency” in the world’s financial markets on Tuesday, pointing to potential threats to still-resilient markets such as cyberattacks, rising government bond yields, or a selloff triggered by artificial intelligence.
According to the IMF’s Global Financial Stability Report, AI investments have so far assisted in mitigating the economic effects of the Middle East conflict and general policy uncertainty. However, it pointed out “growing evidence” that either the potential economic benefits would not be as great as anticipated or AI capabilities might not require as much investment.

|---|---|
| What Happened | The IMF warned of risks to global financial stability. |
| Location | Bangkok, Thailand |
| Year | 2026 |
| Organisation | International Monetary Fund (IMF) |
| Main Risks | AI market correction, rising bond yields, cyberattacks, and banking weaknesses. |
| AI Bond Issuance | Hyperscalers account for around 10% of global investment grade bond issuance, up from less than 1% in 2024. |
| Banking Risk | Banks representing 22% of global banking assets showed weak capital levels in the IMF stress test. |
| Why It Matters | Financial shocks could affect investment, businesses, banks, and the global economy. |
Athanasios Vamvakidis, deputy director of the IMF’s Monetary and Capital Markets Department, stated during a news conference in Bangkok that “an AI market correction will affect the real economy.”
Such “resilience is not necessarily safety,” he said, despite the robust global risk mood supported by strong earnings and excitement about AI. According to him, an AI correction would affect investment and wealth, which might have an effect on larger markets.
The IMF stated in its study that policymakers should keep an eye on the possibility of such a selloff as well as any significant “plausible near-term catalysts” or an increase in government bond yields.
IMF Warns of Global Risks From AI Investment
According to Vamvakidis, each of these hazards may be controllable on its own, but they may also cause vulnerabilities that could have systemic repercussions.
The IMF pointed out that increasing leverage in the industry could worsen any shock by causing forced selling and increased volatility if the pace in AI investment slows. For instance, from less than 1% in 2024, hyperscalers today account for 10% of worldwide investment-grade bond issuance.
IMF Warns of Rising Bond and Cyber Risks
“The market is concerned about absorption potential of the huge issuance that is coming from the sovereigns and increasingly also from the private sector, at the time that central banks are shrinking their balances, and we have to rely more on price-sensitive investors,” Vamvakidis stated.
According to the IMF research, bond markets have so far handled the strain successfully, allowing hedge funds to unwind a portion of their repurchase agreement borrowing without upsetting repo markets. The group urged decision-makers to set the public debt on a sustainable course.
