Time Magazine has chosen a very different type of honoree for its 2025 Person of the Year. Instead of celebrating one individual, the magazine has recognized the collective force shaping today’s world, the “Architects of AI.”
These influential leaders include NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, X owner Elon Musk, and AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li.
AI’s explosive growth began with OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT in late 2022. By September 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that the chatbot had reached around 800 million weekly users, a staggering milestone that pushed tech giants into an aggressive AI race.
Massive investments from big tech continue to pour into AI systems, chips, and cloud infrastructure as companies fight to stay competitive. Time’s second cover for 2025 features a symbolic artwork of the letters “AI” surrounded by workers, emphasizing the industry-wide momentum behind the technology.
The publication highlights how 2025 marked a shift from cautious discussion to rapid deployment. “The risk-averse are no longer in control,” Time said. Innovators like Huang, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son, Altman, Musk, and others are accelerating humanity toward a highly automated and uncertain future.
Together, they represent the individuals driving one of the most powerful technological revolutions ever seen.
Time’s editor-in-chief, Sam Jacobs, explained that no one influenced 2025 as profoundly as the people building AI. He added that humanity must guide AI’s evolution, and every person has a role in shaping how the technology develops.
Analysts agree that 2025 marks a turning point. Forrester expert Thomas Husson told the BBC that AI has become embedded in everyday life, often in ways people don’t even notice. From home assistants to search tools to software, AI is spreading faster than the early internet or smartphones ever did.
Some users now turn to AI chatbots to plan vacations, discover recipes, buy gifts, or gather information. Meanwhile, others remain cautious, concerned about AI’s energy demands, training data, and impact on jobs.
Nik Kairinos, founder of Fountech AI, said Time’s decision is accurate, but warns recognition does not equal readiness. AI still has enormous potential to help or harm humanity. He emphasized that developers have a major responsibility to build AI systems that are ethical, reliable, and aligned with human values.
This is not the first time Time Magazine has chosen a group rather than an individual. Past group honorees include the Ebola fighters in 2014 and whistleblowers in 2002. In 2006, Time selected “You,” honoring digital creators such as early YouTubers, Wikipedia editors, and MySpace users, everyday people shaping the online world.
