Recently, Tom Selleck shared memories of his time spent working with Matthew Perry on the Friends set.
The 79-year-old actor remembered how the late actor used to assist with line readings in an interview with USA Today.
Tom guest-starred on the popular sitcom as Dr. Richard Burke, Monica’s elder romantic interest.
In one of the episodes, Richard tries to recapture his childhood by getting together with Matt LeBlanc’s Joey and Matthew’s Chandler.
Tom remarked, “We had this role reversal thing going, where [Richard] tried to be like them, and them like me,” adding that Matthew was a master at delivering his signature sardonic banter.
He went on, “That line said, ‘Could that shot be any prettier?'” It’s a joke, Tom. Matthew gave me the directions personally because I was unaware of this speaking pattern. It is how he puts it.
However, I continued approaching him during the entire performance to ask, “Can you say it again?,” and he would perform the phrase. That was his signature,” Tom said, expressing his appreciation for Matthew’s “undeveloped skill.”
It’s easy to say this now that he’s gone, but it’s true. The Magnum P.I. alumnus said, “I think he was the most talented of a very talented group of people.”
