After stating that he would like the Liberals to hold a leadership review, MP Ken McDonald changed his mind.
After one of his members of parliament retracted remarks advocating for a leadership review, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared on Thursday that his government would not be diverted by “distractions”.
Speaking to the Liberal caucus in Ottawa, Trudeau stated that the party’s primary concern is the House of Commons’ scheduled return from winter break the following week.
“There’s a lot of distractions, there’s a lot of things going on around this place that Canadians more or less pay attention to,” he stated. “But what we have to pay attention to, and what we do pay attention to, is bringing our communities’ voices to here in Ottawa.”

McDonald released a follow-up statement on Thursday morning, a day after telling Radio-Canada that he believes the party should “clear the air” regarding Trudeau’s suitability to lead the Liberals into the next election.
“The intent of my recent public comments was not to personally call for a leadership review, and I am not calling for one now,” the Member of Parliament for Newfoundland stated.
Although Trudeau left out McDonald’s remarks from his speech on Thursday, several Liberal members of parliament have defended the prime minister.
