The Trump administration has introduced a special edition US passport to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The limited-edition passport features an image of President Donald Trump and will be available beginning on 6 July while supplies last.
President Trump revealed the new design in a social media post on Friday. The passport pages include an image of him standing behind the Resolute Desk with the Declaration of Independence displayed in the background. His signature also appears beneath the photo.
Trump described the new document as America’s “new passport” and added the phrase, “Welcome, but be good!” in his social media message.
Limited Availability for Americans
The US State Department announced that access to the commemorative passport will be highly restricted. Americans cannot apply online or through the mail.
Anyone interested in obtaining the special passport must schedule an in-person appointment at the Washington Passport Agency. The State Department also plans to hold several special passport acceptance events.
At the moment, only two events have been listed on the department’s website, and both are scheduled in Washington, DC. Officials say more events will be announced later.
A Major Change From Traditional Passport Designs
Current US passports showcase important moments in American history. They feature images such as the Moon landing and national symbols like the Statue of Liberty.
The newly designed passport marks a major departure from tradition. It is also the first time a sitting US president has appeared on an American passport.
Officials have not confirmed whether applicants visiting the Washington Passport Agency can choose a standard passport instead of the commemorative version.
Earlier Design Looked Different
The government first announced the commemorative passport in April. That earlier design showed only President Trump’s face and included a gold-colored signature.
The latest version features a different image and adds the number “250” to recognize America’s upcoming anniversary celebration.
Part of a Broader Anniversary Campaign
The special passport is one of several initiatives launched to mark the nation’s 250th birthday. The US Mint recently announced plans for a commemorative gold coin featuring President Trump.
Reports also suggest that Trump could become the first sitting US president to have his signature appear on American banknotes.
The latest moves continue the administration’s efforts to place the president’s name and image on several government projects and commemorative items as the United States prepares to celebrate its historic milestone.
