A federal probe and threats of the city losing millions of dollars in transit funds have been prompted by a fatal knife assault on a Ukrainian refugee on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In a statement, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated, “Metropolises don’t deserve the taxpayers’ money if they can’t keep their trains and buses safe.”
On August 22, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed in what police said was an unprovoked attack. Decarlos Brown Jr., the 34-year-old suspect, was taken into custody and accused with first-degree murder.
The killing’s graphic video, which was made public on Friday, has stoked indignation and rekindled discussions about the crime rate in the US.
