US President Donald Trump, speaking in Miami a day after Zohran Mamdani’s decisive victory as New York City’s mayor, suggested he might provide some support to the new mayor. “We want New York to succeed, and maybe we’ll help him a little,” Trump said, emphasizing the need to see how Mamdani performs.
Trump also expressed concern over what he called a loss of “sovereignty” with Mamdani, a democratic socialist, now leading the country’s largest city. He claimed New York could become communist and promoted Florida as a potential refuge for those leaving the city. Trump framed the choice for Americans as one between “communism and common sense” and contrasted it with the economic success he claims to have achieved.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump advised Mamdani to establish a cooperative relationship with Washington, warning that failure to do so could jeopardize the city’s financial support from the federal government.
Mamdani, who made history as the first Muslim mayor of New York, won despite criticism from business elites, conservative media, and Trump himself. In his victory speech, he challenged Trump directly, saying, “Turn the volume up!” and stressed that New York could serve as an example of defeating the former president’s influence.
Mamdani’s win, alongside Democratic successes in other key state elections, indicates a possible shift in the political mood ahead of next year’s midterms. Trump, while acknowledging the Republican setbacks, attributed some of the losses to the prolonged government shutdown and the absence of his name on the ballot.
