Even if trade concerns threatened to overshadow the goodwill, US President Donald Trump wished Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a happy birthday on Tuesday and praised his efforts to put an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Trump claimed to have had a “wonderful” call with Modi in a post on Truth Social. He praised the Indian leader’s efforts as “tremendous” and tweeted, “Thank you for your support on ending the War between Russia and Ukraine!”
Trump’s decision last month to increase tariffs on the majority of Indian goods to 50% has caused tensions between Washington and New Delhi. India’s ongoing imports of cheap Russian oil, which US officials claim are subtly funding Moscow’s war in Ukraine, prompted the action.
