Former President Donald Trump addressed a rally in Pennsylvania, claiming that consumer prices are “falling tremendously” and pledging to make the United States more affordable for its citizens. Speaking at a casino in a key swing state, Trump emphasized that no goal is higher than reducing the cost of living for Americans.
While fuel and egg prices have seen slight decreases, the cost of housing, childcare, and healthcare continues to strain household budgets. Democrats have used these economic concerns to their advantage in recent local elections, leaving Republicans anxious about the upcoming midterms.
This Pennsylvania rally marked the first in a series of events designed to promote the Trump administration’s economic agenda. Trump also criticized Democrats for framing affordability concerns as a “hoax” and blamed lingering economic challenges on President Joe Biden and US central bank interest rates.
The Federal Reserve has lowered interest rates twice, bringing them to around 3.9%, with further reductions expected. Inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target at 3%, although it is far below the 9.1% peak seen under Biden. Recently, the administration has rolled back tariffs on numerous food products, eased fuel efficiency standards, and introduced Trump-branded retirement accounts for children to help families manage costs.
In an interview with Politico, Trump rated the economy “A plus-plus-plus-plus-plus.” Reuters/Ipsos polling indicates that his approval rating has risen three points to 41%, suggesting his message may be resonating with some voters.
However, many Americans remain concerned. Alaina Hunt, a 37-year-old former construction designer in Oklahoma City, cited rising grocery bills and job losses due to steel and aluminum tariffs. Kansas resident Beth Richardson shared similar frustrations with soaring everyday prices, even for small items like candy.
