According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her efforts to bring about a democratic transition and for advocating for democratic rights in her nation.
In 2024, Venezuelan courts prevented Machado, a 58-year-old industrial engineer who is in hiding, from opposing President Nicolas Maduro, who has held the office since 2013.
“When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognise courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist,” according to the citation.
