California lawmaker Scott Wiener urges impeachment of Trump following Maduro arrest
California State Senator Scott Wiener, considered a potential successor to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump after the U.S. arrested and extradited Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro to New York. Wiener labeled the operation a “lawless coup” and criticized the president for putting personal and political gain above global safety.
Wiener Criticizes Trump’s Foreign Policy and Netanyahu
In a detailed public statement, Wiener said Trump’s actions demonstrate disregard for international norms and could provoke escalation from China, Russia, and Israel. Wiener specifically referenced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that the current situation could exacerbate tensions in Gaza and the West Bank.
Wiener, who hails from South Jersey, suggested that the timing of the Maduro operation might be politically motivated, aimed at distracting from domestic controversies, including Epstein-related documents and polling challenges.
White House Defends Maduro Operation
The White House responded by asserting that the arrest and extradition of Maduro were legal and followed due process. Spokeswoman Anna Kelly stated, “While Democrats take twisted stands in support of indicted drug smugglers, President Trump will always stand with victims and families who can finally receive closure thanks to this historic action.”
Supporters emphasized that the action targeted Maduro’s criminal activities, not regime change, pointing out that opposition leaders in Venezuela faced restrictions under Maduro-aligned courts.
Broader Democratic Response
Wiener’s strong reaction is part of a larger discussion among Democrats regarding Trump’s actions. Some, like Rep. April McClain-Delaney of Maryland, suggested considering impeachment proceedings, arguing that Trump acted without congressional authorization. Rep. Maxine Waters, a longtime critic of Trump, also highlighted the president’s overreach and called for accountability.
Wiener’s district, a heavily Democratic area in San Francisco, will soon vote in a primary that could determine Pelosi’s future successor. Other candidates, including San Francisco Councilwoman Connie Chan, have declared their candidacies or filed FEC paperwork, making the primary highly contested.
