Following Mayor Muriel Bowser’s declaration that the city’s police would not assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement, US President Donald Trump declared on Monday that he would declare a national emergency and federalize Washington, DC.
Information about those who are illegally residing in or entering the United States is at issue. With almost 2,000 troops monitoring the city, Trump’s warning complements a move criticized as government overreach.
The remarks follow thousands of demonstrators who took to the streets this month in protest of Trump’s August National Guard troop deployment to “re-establish law, order, and public safety,” after he referred to crime as a “blight on the capital.”
