WASHINGTON: As part of his broader campaign against crime, US President Donald Trump has directed National Guard troops to enter Memphis.
At the White House on Monday, he signed the order, stating that the city’s increasing crime rate necessitated the action. However, some have denounced the ruling as oppressive and totalitarian.
The task team, according to Trump, would be a “replica” of the one he dispatched to Washington in August.
At a signing ceremony in the Oval Office, Trump informed reporters that the initiative will involve the National Guard in addition to the FBI and other government agencies, and that it was “very important because of the crime that’s going on.”
“We’re going to be doing Chicago probably next,” the Republican continued.
