A major legal victory for US President Donald Trump unfolded on Wednesday as Georgia prosecutors officially dropped all criminal charges against him in the 2020 election interference case.
The move ends what was once considered one of the most serious threats to Trump — a sweeping racketeering case filed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in 2023. Control of the case later slipped from Willis’s hands after she was removed over ethics concerns involving a romantic relationship with a special prosecutor she hired.
Peter Skandalakis, the state official who recently took over the case, said continuing the prosecution would be pointless since “no realistic prospect exists that a sitting President will be compelled to stand trial in Georgia.” A judge approved the dismissal on Wednesday morning.
Trump’s lawyer, Steve Sadow, celebrated the outcome, calling the case baseless from the start.
The case originally targeted Trump and 18 others — including Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman — accusing them of trying to overturn Georgia’s 2020 results after a leaked phone call where Trump asked officials to “find” extra votes.
Legal experts say the dismissal wasn’t unexpected. Skandalakis’s agency lacks the resources to pursue such a massive, multi-defendant case — especially now that Trump has returned to the White House, reshaping the legal landscape around him.
Georgia drops Trump’s 2020 election interference case, calling a trial “futile” as legal challenges collapse following his return to the White House.
