When Did the Tumbler Ridge Shooting Happen?
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at 1:20 pm local time on Tuesday. Officers rushed to the school immediately and issued an emergency alert across the community.
Authorities told residents to stay inside, lock their doors, and avoid going out. Officials placed both the secondary school and the nearby elementary school under lockdown to protect students and staff.
British Columbia’s Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said officers reached the school within two minutes of the first emergency call. She stated that the quick response likely saved many lives.
Tumbler Ridge is a small rural town with around 2,400 residents. The secondary school serves about 160 students from Grades 7 to 12.
Victims of the Tumbler Ridge Mass Shooting
Police confirmed that six people died inside the school building. Emergency teams airlifted two victims to hospital with serious injuries. Another victim died on the way to hospital.
Medical staff treated about 25 others at the local health center for injuries that were not life threatening.
During the investigation, officers searched a nearby home linked to the case. There, they found two more victims who had died. Police continue to check other properties in the area to make sure no one else was harmed.
Authorities have not yet released the names or ages of the victims.
What Police Say About the Suspect
Police have identified the suspected attacker but have not shared the name publicly. Officers found the suspect dead inside the school with what they believe was a self inflicted injury.
Earlier, authorities described the suspect in an emergency alert as a female wearing a dress with brown hair. However, officials have not confirmed further personal details.
