ISLAMABAD: According to The News, as part of the power-sharing agreement reached between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on government formation, the former has shortlisted senior politician Qamar Zaman Kaira, along with two other figures, for Punjab governor.
According to sources, the other two PPP officials under consideration by Bilawal Bhutto’s party for the highly sought-after position are Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood and Chaudhry Riaz.
Meanwhile, the party is now having consultations for the office of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) governor and plans to publish the names of both constitutional positions after the presidential elections on March 9, according to sources.
The development follows last month’s agreement between both parties to create a coalition government in the Centre wherein the PPP, with its 54 National Assembly seats, agreed to support the PML-N in government formation after none of the two parties managed to secure a simple majority in the lower house in the February 8 general elections.
Following several rounds of talks between both sides, it was decided that the PPP would receive various constitutional positions, including Punjab and KP governors, as well as the presidency, for which Asif Ali Zardari has filed nomination papers, and the National Assembly’s deputy speaker, for which Syed Ghulam Mustafa was elected last week.
