Storm Goretti has battered the UK, bringing heavy snow, ice, strong winds, and rain. Tens of thousands of homes are without electricity, and officials warn that severe weather could continue over the weekend.
Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in effect across much of the country until Saturday afternoon. Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, and Yorkshire will also face yellow warnings on Sunday.
Parts of south-west England were under a rare red warning for “severe wind,” which ended overnight. Despite this, more than 30,000 homes in the area remain without power.
The National Grid says it is working around the clock to restore electricity and has already reconnected nearly 170,000 homes across the south-west, Midlands, and south Wales. Thousands of homes in the West Midlands and over 100 in Wales are still affected.
Noah Law, MP for St Austell and Newquay, said on Facebook that homes across mid-Cornwall may continue to experience power problems until Sunday. Cornwall Council described the storm as “one of the most severe storms Cornwall has seen in living memory,” with crews working nonstop to clear fallen trees and carry out emergency repairs.
Some residents have faced serious damage. Tia White, 17, from St Buryan near Lands End, said, “The chimney fell onto the conservatory roof and smashed through it.”
