When Donald Trump travels to Britain next week, the British royal family will use their unparalleled soft power to try to appease the US president in a way that few people can.
The primary diplomatic role of the British monarch, who once oversaw the biggest empire in history, is to mingle and impress international leaders like Trump at formal state functions in the hopes that they will view Britain favorably.
“Is there any leader anywhere in the world who has quite that same attraction to Donald Trump as the British monarch?” Author and historian Anthony Seldon said.
“Derided by many as antiquated and hopelessly out of date – it’s the royal family and the monarchy which is attracting the most powerful person in the world,” he stated to Reuters.
