GENEVA: Amid mounting concern over the Taliban’s actions against women and girls, the UN Human Rights Council on Monday agreed to begin an investigation into grave rights abuses in Afghanistan.
In order to collect and preserve evidence of international crimes, the top rights body of the United Nations decided to establish an investigation.
The 47-nation council in Geneva endorsed a draft resolution proposed by the European Union without a vote.
Ib Petersen, the ambassador of Denmark, introduced the resolution on behalf of the European Union. “Four years after the Taliban took over by force, the human rights situation has only deteriorated amidst a deepening humanitarian crisis,” he added.
