A draft resolution to permanently lift sanctions on Iran was not adopted by the UN Security Council on Friday, but Tehran and major European nations still have eight days to try to reach an agreement on a postponement.
After Britain, France, and Germany began a 30-day process on August 28 to reimpose UN sanctions, accusing Tehran of not adhering to a 2015 agreement with world powers that sought to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon, the 15-member UN Security Council was forced to vote on the draft resolution on Friday. Iran denies intending to do so.
On Friday, the draft document was approved by Algeria, Pakistan, China, and Russia. Two members abstained, and nine members voted against.
