According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group, violence and discrimination against Muslims and Palestinians increased by over 70% in the United States during the first half of 2024 as a result of increased Islamophobia brought on by Israel’s conflict in Gaza.
Human rights activists have noted an increase in antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Palestinian sentiment worldwide since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and a humanitarian catastrophe.
According to CAIR, it received 4,951 complaints of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian incidents in the first half of 2024, up almost 70% from the same period in 2023.
According to CAIR, the majority of the complaints fell into the following categories: hate crimes, employment discrimination, immigration and asylum, and education discrimination.CAIR recorded 8,061 of these complaints in 2023—roughly 3,600 of which came in the final three months following the start of the conflict.
The stabbing death of a 6-year-old Palestinian-American child in Illinois in October, the stabbing death of a Palestinian-American man in February, the shooting death of three students, the opening of a new tab of Palestinian descent in Vermont in November, and the attempted drowning of a 3-year-old Palestinian-American girl in May are among the concerning U.S. incidents that have occurred in the last nine months.
