How Can Football Lawmakers Fix Corner Kick Chaos in the Premier League? Corner kicks in the Premier League have turned into wrestling matches. Players push, grab, and block each other before the ball even drops. Goals from set pieces are rising, but so is frustration. Managers, referees, and fans now question whether football’s lawmakers need to step in. Growing Frustration Over Grappling at Corners Recent matches have highlighted the issue. During a clash between Everton and Manchester United, several Everton players crowded goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Leny Yoro ended up inside the net after being pushed, while Harry Maguire also became involved in the chaos. Everton manager David Moyes criticized referees for failing to act. He argued officials avoid making tough calls in crowded penalty areas. Other coaches share similar concerns. Arsenal have earned a reputation for mastering blocking tactics at corners. Moyes even described them as the best at using these so called dark arts, though he admitted they do it effectively. In Arsenal’s recent game against Chelsea, players visibly held opponents during set pieces. Chelsea conceded twice from corners in that 2 to 1 defeat. Is the Premier League Threshold Too High? Statistics show the trend clearly. Around 27 percent of goals in the Premier League this season have come from set pieces. That is higher than Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga, and Ligue 1. The league believes its foul threshold sits at the right level. Before the season began, coaches, captains, referees, and pundits supported the current approach. Officials only punish clear and obvious holding, sometimes with VAR support. Still, many fans see players grabbing shirts while VAR checks tight offsides. That contrast fuels anger online. Possible Law Changes on the Table Some former officials suggest rule adjustments. One idea would allow referees to award penalties once they blow the whistle for a corner, even if the ball has not yet entered play. This change could stop early grappling. Another proposal requires attackers to start outside the six yard box before the kick. That would reduce crowding around the goalkeeper and create more space. So far, International Football Association Board has not prioritized this issue in its recent meetings. Lawmakers may view the problem as part of the natural evolution of tactics rather than a crisis. Who Should Take Responsibility? Coaches design these routines. Players execute them. Referees enforce the rules. Each group plays a role. However, as tactics grow more aggressive, enforcement becomes harder. Sixteen players can squeeze into a small area during a single corner. Referees must track multiple holds at once. That task tests even experienced officials. If the game’s image continues to suffer, lawmakers may have little choice but to act. Until then, corner kick chaos looks set to remain part of the Premier League story.

A soccer player wearing a red Liverpool FC kit, identified as Virgil van Dijk, stands on the pitch with his arms stretched out to his sides in a gesture of confusion or exasperation. He is wearing the captain's armband and his jersey has the standard chartered sponsor logo. The background is a slightly blurred, dark stadium crowd.

On another frustrating night at Anfield, the attention shifted from Mohamed Salah to Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, as the Dutch defender’s worrying dip in form overshadowed the 1-1 draw against Sunderland.

Salah, benched for a second Premier League game in a row due to poor recent performances, avoided the spotlight this time. Instead, van Dijk — once regarded as an unbeatable defensive force — faced heavy criticism for another disappointing display.

A Decline Hard to Ignore

Both Van Dijk, 34, and Salah, 33, signed new two-year deals in the summer, and fans widely supported the decision. But halfway into the season, both stars appear far from their prime, raising serious concerns for Liverpool’s title defence.

Liverpool’s backline has looked unstable since Arne Slot and the recruitment team spent £450m in the summer. Despite the investment, the defence has only become more fragile—made worse by Ibrahima Konaté’s slump and Milos Kerkez’s struggles to adapt at left-back.

Van Dijk, for years the club’s defensive leader, has shown uncharacteristic errors. His handball against PSV, which gifted the visitors a penalty, and his decision-making against Sunderland have highlighted his major dip in confidence.

Costly Mistakes Against Sunderland

Sunderland’s opener came after van Dijk gave the ball away, backed off instead of pressing, and turned his back on Chemsdine Talbi’s long-range effort—something the Dutchman has been criticised for before.

Former England captain Steph Houghton said:
“Van Dijk gives the ball away and then backs off. It’s the wrong decision. He needs to go to the ball.”

Jamie Redknapp also added:
“Last season, he was flawless. Now he’s hesitant and making mistakes.”

The statistics back it up: his recoveries per game, tackles, and interceptions have all dipped to their lowest levels in his Liverpool career.

Leadership Missing on the Pitch

Despite being the captain, van Dijk hasn’t been able to lift the team when they needed inspiration. Liverpool played slowly, lacked energy, and appeared lost, making their recent win over West Ham feel like an exception rather than a resurgence.

Salah’s introduction in the second half brought hope—but little impact. Even new signing Alexander Isak failed to spark life into the attack.

Liverpool Narrowly Avoids Defeat

Liverpool were lucky not to lose all three points. A Nordi Mukiele deflection brought them level, but Sunderland continued pushing. Federico Chiesa’s brilliant clearance in stoppage time prevented Wilson Isidor from scoring a dramatic winner.

Sunderland, meanwhile, earned praise for their fearless approach under manager Régis Le Bris. With 23 points and a spot in sixth place, they look fully competitive in the Premier League — and could easily have left Anfield with more.

A Tough Road Ahead for Slot and Liverpool

For Arne Slot and his struggling side, the performance raised more questions than answers. With the team lacking structure, ideas, and confidence, Liverpool’s title hopes look to be slipping away quickly.

Now more than ever, van Dijk and Salah must rediscover their best form — or Liverpool’s season could unravel further.
