Beyond damaged houses and flooded farmland, Punjab was hit by floods in late August and early September. They destroyed livelihoods, destroyed crops, and rocked entire towns to their core.
The change is striking in Jhang, a district that was formerly recognized for its lush fields and pastures. Where cattle formerly roamed and rice paddies were laid out in tidy rows, there is now only muck and standing water.
The harm is not intangible to Qasim Raza Khan Sial, a farmer and community volunteer from Meerne Wala village, Garh Maharaja, which is home to the shrine of the poet and mystic Sultan Bahu from the 17th century.
