Governor Calls Federal Action “Campaign of Retribution”
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz criticized the Trump administration for temporarily halting Medicaid payments to the state, calling the move a “campaign of retribution.” The pause followed Vice President JD Vance’s announcement that Minnesota has 60 days to address alleged fraud in its Medicaid system.
Vance stated the federal funds would remain on hold until the state “takes its obligations seriously to stop the fraud that’s being perpetrated against the American taxpayer.”
Walz responded on X, claiming the action is politically motivated, targeting a blue state. He said the freeze could severely impact veterans, families with young children, people with disabilities, and working residents.
Walz Challenges Fraud Claims
The governor disputed claims that fraud justified the payment pause. He said federal agents sent to investigate were engaging in aggressive tactics, including arresting minors and confronting protesters. Walz also criticized the Justice Department for reducing prosecutorial capacity and highlighted Trump’s pardons of individuals accused of fraud.
Federal Officials Cite Audit Findings
Investigations into Minnesota’s Medicaid program began after reports of widespread social and welfare program abuse emerged in December 2025. Officials estimate potential fraud could exceed $9 billion. A heavily redacted federal audit reportedly identified significant vulnerabilities in the state’s system.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator Mehmet Oz called the payment freeze “the largest action against fraud that we’ve ever taken.” Oz explained that $259 million in Medicaid payments would be deferred based on a review of claims from the last three months of 2025.
Oz emphasized that the quarter-billion-dollar hold affects the current month’s Medicaid reimbursements to Minnesota.
